This unique postgraduate adult guidance certificate programme aims to help guidance practitioners to develop their understanding of guidance issues in a work context and to critically evaluate their own practice. Therefore, it is no surprise that further education colleges are enrolling their guidance staff on the programme which is undergoing a resurgence as colleges acknowledge the importance of well-qualified guidance staff.

About the programme

The programme comprises Certificate, Diploma and MSc awards.

The Certificate is made up of three core modules, and an elective module (60 Scottish Masters (SM) credits).

The Diploma is made up of one core module, one elective module and one option module (120 SM credits). Diploma holders can complete a work-based project and present a dissertation of around 15,000 words on an adult guidance topic to gain the MSc (180 SM credits).

The core modules are:

  • The Organisation and Practice of Adult Guidance
  • Using Information Resources in Adult Guidance
  • Counselling Skills in Adult Guidance
  • Work Based Learning Agreement (Diploma only)

The programme is designed to be studied by distance learning, with tutorial support and a workshop for each module. Students who do not want to enrol on the whole certificate programme can enrol on individual modules.

A comprehensive Study Guide is provided for each module with a range of activities, e.g. reading set texts, practical and reflective exercises.

Attendance at one or two-day workshops per module is a compulsory part of the programme. These workshops enable students to engage with other guidance practitioners from a wide range of organisations throughout Scotland and beyond.

The workshops are normally held at the University's Jordanhill Campus in Glasgow. However, subject to numbers attending these workshops could be held on an outreach basis.
