LSIS Council discusses election
Posted: 30 March 2010
In advance of its formal meeting on March 11th the LSIS Council held a seminar to review the election pledges of the major parties which have relevance for the learning and skills sector; and to discuss possible implications for the sector and for LSIS services. To support that discussion, LSIS prepared a short background paper Party Policy Pledges: the bare essentials; and a slide presentation Policy pledges - what might the election mean for our sector?.
Please note that this is intended to provide information. The content has been taken from party sources, and does not represent the views of LSIS.
Budget 2010
Items specific to the education sector include:
- The young persons' guarantees of employment or training for every 18-24 year old after 6 months out-of-work being extended until March 2012;
- A one off investment in higher education through a £270m University Modernisation Fund from September 2010 to help create 20,000 more university places. Mr Darling said,
"these extra places allow us to strengthen our offer to our young people and ease parents' concern that their child's first taste of life after school or college will be a prolonged spell in the dole queue"
; - Individual departments are due to publish details of how they will make the £11bn savings announced in the Pre-Budget Report later today. Those most relevant to our sector are not available at the time of writing, and so we will send an update if these contain further significant information.
