Creating a Welfare State Fit for the 21st Century
Wednesday 15 July 2009
9:15am - 4:00pm
Central London
According to the Office of National Statistics, during the three months to January, the number of people unemployed totalled 2.03 million, up by 165,000. The economic downturn has caused an increasingly difficulty of finding jobs in the market.
The Government has committed to reforming the welfare system to ensure everyone who can work, does work. The Welfare Reform Bill will not only help tackle inequality of opportunity and improve employment outcomes, but will also further reform welfare and the benefit system to improve support and incentives for people to move from benefits into work.
This forum will discuss the creation of a welfare state to fit the 21st century, the Welfare Reform Bill and its implications and successful delivery, what benefits might look like in the future, opportunities to generate work for disadvantage groups, opportunities to tackle worklessness, and overcoming labour market disadvantage.
