Research on graduate recruitment and development in Northern Ireland

Posted: 11 September 2008

Case study research carried out within several employment sectors in Northern Ireland has been published which concludes that organisations need to take a more flexible and contingent approach to their human resource development (HRD) strategies. The case studies involved a series of interviews with human resource (HR) managers and line managers who supervise graduates, as well as graduates participating in development programmes. The research looked at innovative local strategies used by employers to address an apparently global problem of attracting and retaining high calibre workers with "work ready" skills. A variety of strategies were identified, often involving the use of placements or mentoring.
