Denham calls on employees to enter higher education

Posted: 21 July 2008

Every person who has the ability to go to university should have the opportunity to do so. John Denham, the DIUS secretary, called on employees to enroll in higher education to improve their skills, job prospects and earnings.

Speaking at the University of Southampton, the city which Denham represents in Parliament, the secretary said, DIUS' own recent research found that four million people are considering, or willing to consider participating in higher education. ... There may be others who now consider, quite wrongly, that their time has passed. We are now giving them a second chance. I believe that every person who has the ability to go to university should also have the opportunity to do so. We must send out a clear message that it is not too late”. Denham noted that about six million people overall in the British workforce lack Level 4 qualifications.

The DIUS release accompanying Denham's call contains a useful summary of Government initiatives in the higher education sector (list starts below the main article)
