Learning for Life

Posted: 22 March 2007

Learning for Life: A new framework for adult skills by Simone Delorenzi has just been published by the Institute for Public Policy Research. The press release from IPPR concentrates on one of the major recommendations of the report which is that adults in FE need student loans.

However, just as interesting, is the analysis in the report which echoes many of the issues of concern to NAEGA and its members. For example:

  • New Labour made an early commitment to 'lifelong learning', and has significantly increased the resources allocated to further education
  • However, adult learners now "have less choice over what they are allowed to study"
  • Adult learners "get less financial support"
  • Teaching is often by poor quality staff
  • Any new framework should start from "the benefits that adult learning can bring to individuals"
