Decisions at 48 is designed to provide practical strategies and techniques which can be applied immediately to address issues related to the UK's ageing workforce.
Although we are living longer, birth rates have fallen: it is predicted that between 2010 and 2020 only 600,000 young people will enter the job market, whilst an estimated 1.3 million new jobs will be created. By 2020, 22% of the workforce will be well into their sixties.
The shifting age profile will create permanent shortages in the UK labour market. It will force organisations to re-think their employment practices. How they respond to this shift will determine their success in maintaining access to a viable pool of labour in an increasingly competitive environment.
What is now needed:
- Practical solutions that every organisation can use.
- Holistic strategies which aim to increase the motivation of the existing employees, including upgrading employees skills on a regular basis.
- Flexible employment options, access to training, strategic management of an age-diverse workforce and support for career planning.
- Plans for managing the impact of changing demographics as an integral part of achieving strategic, organisation goals.
Decisions at 48 will showcase exemplars of best practice and provide an independent forum for professionals across all industries to share their experiences and learn from each other.
