Branch Meeting - June 28th 2005
Advising and Supporting Asylum Seekers, Refugees and EU Migrants into Education, Training and Employment
This was a very successful event for the branch, so successful in fact that we had a waiting list and have already planned to re-run the same event in September
The session was led by Tiffy Allen from RETAS the Leeds based organisation and it was a very lively and proactive morning. There was also a representative from Calderdale and Kirklees Careers, Jane Lomas, who has lots of experience in dealing with EU migrants.
Many questions were raised lots of answers given and where there were no answers much discussion ensued. Everyone that attended left with a greater awareness of options and possibilities to be used when giving guidance to these clients. It was also beneficial to become aware that as individual guidance practitioners we are not alone in any circumstance or situation.
Participants were given copies of a very useful publication a newly written NICEC briefing ‘Employment and Training Advice for Refugees: What Works?’
We already have a list of those wanting to attend the repeat session in September but if anyone else is interested please express this to Judy Midgley at judymidgley@btinternet.com
At the business part of the meeting the following people were elected:
Judy Midgley - Convener
Stacey Powell - Convener with responsibility for finance
Pat Mitchell - representative to the board
